Combining their Elemental Powers of Rock -Earth (Kasey Cox-Drums), Wind (Vocals-Lon Lopez), Fire (Mike Favero-Guitar), Water (Eric Matsuno-Bass), the Booty Call stands ready to face all those who oppose the Forces of Rock. To all the concerned Bootyheads, Yes, the rumors are true. Lon Lopez and the Booty Call has just finished recording and is putting on the finishing touches to their new release tenatively titled

"Lon Lopez and the Booty Call Present, The Beefy Gnar Gnar"

It will be another seven song release and it includes 3 brand new songs along with three fan favorites that didn't make the first disc and a remix of the smash hit Sweet. The song list is as follows...

Rokin, Knock It Off, Usin', Tap Water, Just My Luck, Mean Sheets and the Sweet Remix.

Once again we recorded at 510 Studios in Fremont with the always great, always patient and always fun Aaron Tressel. It was another awesome time recording and considering that we threw this all together in about a week and a half and with only two practices is pretty amazing. My hats of to Kasey, Mike and Eric for giving so much to the Beefy Gnar Gnar.

REVIEWS

Lon Lopez is a hoot. The leader of one of the most fun loving bands in San Jose's music history,Statue Man" has released his first solo effort. This is a fine CD, really smooth and mellow. Lon has a voice made for crooning the slight uptemp reggae musical gems that are featured here. Guitar god Rich Ramirez contributes some powerful vocals on the track "Dancin' Freak". Other outstanding tracks are "Buddow" and "Peace". The first track "The Booty Call" features Lon's answering machine loaded with dozens of his many ladies all wanting that Lon Lopez style of lovin'.
And knowing Lon as I do, it's a wonder he had strength to record this album. Can't wait for the next one...

I know what you're thinking. "Why is this band called 'the Booty Call?'" Well, the answer is very simple. It is not so much a "band" as it is a one-off album from California singer Lon Lopez and a backing band. See, self explanatory. But don't worry, I can also answer your next question, which of course is" "What is Pop Rock Soul?" Lopez describes this as the generic music store category for most musicians. The Booty Call takes aspects from all of these, so "Pop Rock Soul" is actually supposed to be an adequate description of their music.

Some of the styles borrowed are immediately recognizable. There seems to be a heavy ska influence, especially in Rich Ramirez's guitar playing (see "Sweet"). Also, the music very often seems to bounce like Phish (see "Peace"). But, don't be fooled into thinking that the music sounds like either of these. Somewhere in the mix a little Frank Zappa comes through as well, not to mention numerous others. There is always something in their music on which it is impossible to put a finger.

Overall this collection is pretty easy on the ears. Rarely do things seem to fall flat. Yet, the attempts to rock out do not come across well. It usually seems to be more a problem with the mix rather than the performance, itself, but the songs which try to be rockers don't have the energy they should to meet their full potential.

There is one other criticism to be made, and that is the length of the recording. There are only eight tracks and one of them is more a spoken intro to the album than anything. But, the album does leave the listener hoping this project is more than a "booty call."
